The Rhythm of Discarded Parts 2023
Oil paint on musical scores
For the series of painting-scores, The Rhythm of Discarded Parts, Stromberg reflects on what it means to listen to everyday rhythms and questions how to re-corporate discarded elements into new understandings and experiences. Each page of the scores evokes the essential movements and gestures of fallen sticks and chunks of wood that are washed up by The Arno River on the riverbank near her studio. As the water rises and falls through both natural and manmade manipulations, Stromberg questions what it would mean to stop and listen to the rhythms of these fallen and discarded pieces of wood. What sounds do they evoke? What rhythms do they reveal? Stromberg proposes this metaphor as consideration, asking if we are able to listen deeply to that which is not heard.
